CLASS 2 – GASES
2.1 – Flammable Gases
- Examples: Propane, Butane, Aerosols
- Risks: Fire, explosion in confined areas
- Vehicles: Ventilated, properly secured cylinders
2.2 – Non-Flammable, Non-Toxic Gases
- Examples: Nitrogen, Helium, CO₂
- Risks: Asphyxiation in enclosed spaces
2.3 – Toxic Gases
- Examples: Chlorine, Ammonia
- Risks: Poisoning, severe respiratory harm
(Usually requires high-level ADR)
CLASS 3 – FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS
- Examples: Petrol, Diesel (limited), Methanol, Paints, Adhesives
- Risks: Vapour ignition, fire spread
- Packaging: Drums, IBCs, jerry cans, tankers
- Key note: Many courier movements are limited quantity (LQ) compliant.
CLASS 4 – FLAMMABLE SOLIDS
4.1 – Flammable Solids
- Examples: Matches, self-reactive substances, solid fuels
- Risks: Easily ignited, strong burning
4.2 – Substances Liable to Spontaneous Combustion
- Examples: Oily rags, phosphorus
- Risks: Can ignite without an external heat source
4.3 – Substances Dangerous When Wet
- Examples: Sodium, Potassium
- Risks: React violently with water, producing flammable gas
CLASS 5 – OXIDISING SUBSTANCES & ORGANIC PEROXIDES
5.1 – Oxidising Agents
- Examples: Ammonium nitrate, hydrogen peroxide solutions
- Risks: Promote combustion, intensify fires
5.2 – Organic Peroxides
- Examples: MEKP (fibreglass kit hardeners), industrial catalysts
- Risks: Highly unstable, sensitive to heat/shock
CLASS 6 – TOXIC & INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCES
6.1 – Toxic Substances
- Examples: Pesticides, cyanides, laboratory chemicals
- Risks: Poisoning via inhalation, skin contact, or digestion
6.2 – Infectious Substances
- Examples: Clinical waste, diagnostic specimens (Category A/B)
- Risks: Spread of disease
(Most small courier movements are Category B and exempted if packaged correctly.)
CLASS 8 – CORROSIVES
- Examples: Acids, alkaline cleaners, battery acid, caustic soda
- Risks: Severe skin burns, metal corrosion, fume release
- Packaging: IBCs, drums, UN-approved containers
CLASS 9 – MISCELLANEOUS DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES
- Examples:
- Lithium batteries (loose or equipment-packed)
- Environmentally hazardous substances
- Dry ice
- Magnetised materials
- Risks: Fire (lithium), environmental harm, movement hazards
